Personal finances (budget, assets, tax return)
How to use the household budget, assets, reports, tax return, and contracts menus of a personal space — including which space to file your tax return in.
The five money menus
| Menu | What it does |
|---|---|
| Household budget | Record day-to-day income and expenses, monthly budgets, savings goals, big purchases |
| Assets | Register financial accounts, real estate and vehicles, and loans |
| Reports | Monthly summaries and a balance sheet derived from the two menus above (view only) |
| Tax return | Prepare a return, import withholding certificates from employers, keep past filings |
| Contracts | Manage fixed costs, subscriptions, and insurance contracts |
You can have one personal space per account (see Spaces). Important documents, family, health, housing, and civic menus are covered in Personal space: everyday life.
Which space do I file my tax return in?
| Your situation | Where to go |
|---|---|
| An employee filing for medical expense deductions, hometown tax donations, multiple employers, etc. (usually for a refund) | The tax return menu of your personal space (this page) |
| A sole proprietor filing business income (producing blue-return financial statements) | The Tax menu of a business space |
Business income is calculated together with the accounting books, and blue-return filing requires double-entry bookkeeping (Income Tax Act art. 143 and related). That is why business filings live in the business space, which holds the books. If you have an employer and also run a side business, finalize the business side in the business space first, then bring the result into your personal tax return.
Household budget
The tabs are Income & Expenses, Household Ledger, Goal Management, Big Purchases, and Guide.
Income & Expenses
Pick a month and add entries one at a time from the button in the upper right. Each entry has a type (income / expense), date, category, amount, and note.
- The month's income, expenses, and net balance are shown at the top
- Below that, expenses are broken down by category with amounts and percentage bars
- Use the pencil icon on a row to edit it and the trash icon to delete it
Household Ledger
This tab records entries per income type. Register your filer information first (name, address, filing type, income types, and so on) and the table becomes available. It offers keyword search, bulk delete via checkboxes, and pagination. If your filing type is blue return with double-entry bookkeeping, the table switches to debit-total and credit-total columns.
What you enter on this tab is stored in your browser (see the caution below).
Goal Management
Budgets and savings goals share one tab.
- Budget: set a monthly budget amount per category, and it is compared against the actuals from the Income & Expenses tab to show what remains or by how much you are over
- Savings: register a goal name, target amount, current savings, monthly contribution, and target date to see progress and a forecast of how many months remain
Big Purchases
Register purchases such as appliances and furniture whose replacement timing you want to remember. Each record holds an item name, category, purchase date, price, warranty expiry, replacement estimate (YYYY-MM), and notes.
Assets
The tabs are Financial accounts, Real estate & vehicles, Loans, and Guide. Each tab shows a grid of cards for the common types. Click an unregistered card to open the dialog for that type; types not in the grid are added freely from "Add another…". Registered cards can be edited and deleted.
| Tab | Example types | Main fields |
|---|---|---|
| Financial accounts | Savings account / Time deposit / Credit card / Brokerage account / iDeCo / NISA / E-money | Institution, branch, account number, notes |
| Real estate & vehicles | House / Condominium / Land / Parking / Car / Motorcycle | Purchase date, purchase price, notes |
| Loans | Mortgage / Car loan / Education loan / Personal loan | Institution, total borrowed, interest rate, monthly payment, start date, payoff date |
Recording balances and valuations
On any tab, choosing "Record balance" ("Record valuation" for real estate and vehicles) on a registered card lets you enter an as-of date, amount, and note. Records are appended rather than overwritten, and the record with the newest as-of date becomes the current amount, so you can look back at what a balance was and when.
The purchase price of real estate and vehicles, and the total borrowed on a loan, are read as the amount on that date, so they serve as the starting valuation. Recording a valuation or balance later takes precedence.
An account with no balance ever recorded is treated as unknown and left out of the balance sheet totals — it is not counted as zero.
Reports
The tabs are Monthly report, Balance sheet, and Guide. This menu only displays derived summaries — you cannot enter or edit data here. Correct the numbers in the household budget menu or the assets menu instead.
- Monthly report: step back and forth through months to see that month's income, expenses, and net balance, the category breakdown of income and of expenses, and a six-month trend
- Balance sheet: assets (deposits / securities / tangible assets) and liabilities (loans / credit) side by side, with the difference shown as equity. Amounts come from the balance or valuation with the newest as-of date recorded in the Assets menu. Items with nothing recorded show as "Not recorded" in the detail list and are left out of the totals, with the count shown at the top of the page
- Net worth trend (at the bottom of the Balance sheet tab): your net worth as of each month end, going back 12 months. Recording a balance with a past date updates that month's value too. Items with no valuation at a given point are excluded from that month's totals, and months with no valued items at all show as "No data"
Tax return
There is a year selector, and the tabs are Create Tax Return, Workspace Link, Tax Return History, and Guide. From January through March the previous year is selected by default.
Caution: the Create and History tabs are stored in your browser
Data you enter on the Create Tax Return and Tax Return History tabs — and on the Household Ledger tab of the household budget menu — is stored only inside the browser you are using. It is not saved to the server.
- It is not visible from another device or another browser
- It is lost if you clear your browsing data (site data)
- Anything entered in a private window is lost when that window closes
- The filer information dialog has no field for your My Number. The My Number box on the generated tax-return PDF is left blank, so fill it in yourself before you file
The only tax return that is saved on the server, and therefore visible from your other devices, is the one you create on the Workspace Link tab. After entering important figures, keep your own copy — for example by downloading the return PDF.
Create Tax Return
Five steps: Basic Info, Income, Deductions, Tax, Confirmation. The amounts are calculated from your Household Ledger entries and your filer information, so this stepper itself has no fields for typing amounts.
- Basic Info: review your filer information. If none is registered, register it here first (you cannot advance until you do)
- Income: a card per income type showing revenue, necessary expenses, deductions, and the resulting income, plus your total income
- Deductions: the list of income deductions and their total
- Tax: total income leads to taxable income, then income tax, tax credits, and the reconstruction surtax, ending in a refund amount or tax due
- Confirmation: a summary of the return and the final result
Mark each step with "Complete this step"; once all five are complete the return is marked as filed. Pressing a completed step again clears its completion.
Workspace Link
This is the tab whose tax return is saved on the server. Select a year, create the return with "Create for {year}", and you can then:
- Import from workspaces: search the business spaces you belong to for that year's withholding certificates and pick which employers to import in a confirmation dialog. Importing works only where you are registered as an employee linked to your account and a withholding certificate has been issued
- Auto-aggregate from budget: gather deduction candidates from the medical and donation (hometown tax) entries in your household budget, then choose which ones to import
- Add or remove income, income deductions, and tax credits by hand (each row shows whether it is Manual, Linked, or Auto)
- Register the filer information (name and address) used for the return PDF and the e-Tax output
- Review the tax summary: total income, total deductions, taxable income, calculated tax, total tax credits, base income tax, reconstruction surtax, total withholding, and the resulting tax due or refund
- Download the return PDF and the e-Tax CSV
- File the return with "File tax return", and afterwards raise a correction with "Create amended return" (the additional tax to pay is calculated)
Tax rates and deduction amounts follow the rules for the year in question. Submitting the return itself — in person, by post, or through e-Tax — is up to you.
Tax Return History
Cards for the last five years are listed. "Aggregate" summarizes that year's total income, total expenses, income, total deductions, and estimated tax; "Mark as filed" and "Revert to draft" switch its state; and cards you no longer need can be deleted. This tab is also stored in your browser.
Contracts
The tabs are Fixed costs, Subscriptions, Insurance, and Guide. They share the same card list, and the tab decides which categories you can choose.
| Tab | Categories |
|---|---|
| Fixed costs | Lease / Telecom / Utilities |
| Subscriptions | Subscription / Membership / Other |
| Insurance | Insurance |
"Add contract" registers a title, counterparty, category, amount, billing cycle (monthly / yearly / one-time), start date, end date, auto-renewal, and notes. Auto-renewing contracts get a badge, and contracts whose end date falls within three months are flagged "Expiring soon".
What family members see when you share
Even when you share your personal space with family, the following are hidden from the people you invite by default. You always see them yourself.
- Household budget amounts (transactions, budgets, savings goals, big purchases, asset valuations, loan amounts)
- Financial account numbers
- The taxpayer number on your tax return
